A recent article in The Wall Street Journal featured the plight of bookbinders in the Bay Area. Like a lot of the trades, the digital revolution has changed them significantly. Printed books, after all, are becoming largely obsolete. So the need for bookbinders is shrinking. However they are still needed for small, custom jobs and repair of older, bound material like family Bibles.
An interesting exception is the invention of the Dodo case for iPads.
This invention has actually increased the work load at one local bookbinder's business. It's a great example of how our "can-do" spirit sees a need and comes up with an imaginative solution for that need.
We need to have classes in invention at high schools and colleges. There's a tremendous amount of problem-solving talent out there. We simply need to give it the tools and encouragement it needs to see it blossom. Click on this link to see a video on how Dodo cases are made.
